Supporting music therapy in Cornwall
Cornwall Music Therapy Trust is a charity: Registered Charity number 1115894
Background & Function
Cornwall Music Therapy Trust was established in 2006 to fund development and research into music therapy in Cornwall. It is entirely dependent on grants and fundraising and receives no government funding.
Through partnership schemes, the aim is to support those suffering from mental or physical illness, those living with disabilities or with emotional or behavioural problems, or those in need of rehabilitation as a result of such illness, by the provision of music therapy.
The Trust has provided funding for a team of music therapists working at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, special and mainstream schools, children’s centres and also with adults in various settings. It has also made small grants to an independent provider in North Cornwall.
The Trust has been very successful, through pilot schemes and match funding, in developing long-term sustainability of music therapy projects with new groups of both adults and children.
The Trust aims to provide support for:
- the development and extension of opportunities for music therapy in mainstream and special schools and with adult groups
- an early years’ programme of music therapy
- widening opportunities within the hospital environment and hospital education
- the expansion of the programme to encourage and enable children with special needs to enjoy instrumental and vocal tuition
- small supervised research projects
- dementia sufferers
- people with post-traumatic stress disorder
The trustees jointly have a considerable breadth of knowledge and experience in Music, Health, Education and Law, which is of great benefit to the Trust and the music therapists.
